Creating a Job-Ready Cybersecurity Workforce: Connecting the NICE Framework to Education and Training
Tuesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 27, 2021
The CAE in Cybersecurity Community will hold an online, two-day workshop on Tuesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 27, 2021 on “Creating a Job-Ready Cybersecurity Workforce: Connecting the NICE Framework to Education and Training.” This workshop will engage attendees to explore how the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework) can support learning processes and assessment mechanisms for competency development. Register here. Maximum attendance is 70. Attendees will be expected to attend both days.
In November 2020 NICE published its first revision of the NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-181, the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework), a fundamental reference for describing and sharing information about cybersecurity work. The NICE Framework was developed in response to a growing need for skilled workers in this field and bridges employers, education and training providers who are part of an integrated ecosystem facilitating career pathways for learners. At its foundation are core building blocks -- Task, Knowledge, and Skill statements -- and the NICE Framework identifies means of applying these via Teams, Work Roles, and Competencies. The latter of these -- Competencies -- were newly introduced in this revision and are reflective of a shift in the cybersecurity profession at large towards a skills- and competency-based approach in recruitment practices and workforce development. In this workshop we will explore ways the NICE Framework can help increase alignment and coordination between employers and education and training providers to improve learner outcomes.
The event will end with a greater understanding of:
The greatest benefits to and challenges in creating a Job-Ready Cybersecurity Workforce
How stakeholders can utilize the NICE Framework in the development of learning pathways and credentials
An understanding of how the NICE Framework can support learning processes and assessment mechanisms for competency development
Next steps for the NICE community, including how feedback and insights raised at this workshop should be brought forward to expand applications and uses of the NICE Framework in support of learners and employers
Attendees are expected to have an understanding of the NICE Framework prior to this workshop, as well as to have reviewed the recently available NIST draft resources on Competencies that are currently out for public comment. Useful links are below:
